According to flashbacks of veterans of Mariupol sport, basket-ball began to develop in Mariupol (then Zhdanov) in the first post-war years.
At the beginning of 50th «Iskra» Zhdanov laboured for a right to participate in championship of Ukrainian SSR and drawing of Cup of republic, where came forward with variable success in 60-70ths teams of Zhdanov (including and womanish).
SK «Azovstal», SK «Azov» are permanent participants of regional and republican championships.
New impulse in town (foremost child-youth) was development of basket-ball on the middle of 70th began 80th, when youth team SK «Novator» (future SK «Azovmash») under the direction of Valentine Novel with enviable constancy won championship of the region, took seats of prizes in Ukraine.
Cognitions of wisdoms of game understood in «Novator», saying farther more the word in large basket-ball A. Bondarenko, A. Kibenko, M. Dyachenko, A. Lukyanets, L. Yaylo, S. Ivchatov, À. Yangitcher and many other. On a base SK «Novator» the first professional basket-ball team «Azovmash» was created.
The debut of «Azovmash» at the level of team masters took place in September of 1990 – the team started in the II league of championship of USSR (Ukrainian zone) and occupied 6 place from 8 teams-participants.
By the decision of Soviet of folk deputies of Ilichevskiy district of Mariupol on Augusts, 22, 1991 the «Self-supporting basket-ball club «Azovmash» was registered.
In the first championship of independent Ukraine «Azovmash» confidently won a tournament in the I league (37 victories are in 44 matches) and got registration among 12 strongest teams of country.
Upon termination of season of 1992-1993 after «Azovmash» glory of «thunderstorm of authorities gained a foothold firmly». Still, the team beat all prizewinners of I championship and occupied in the total ever-higher for a debutant 7 place.
Seemed, a club expected light future, but it came as relations of markets, and the leading players of «Azovmash» appeared in prominent and rich «Budivelnik» (L. Yaylo), and «Shakhter» (S. Ivchatov, And. Yangitcher).
